The 80/20 Rule in Skincare

I am a big believer in the 80/20 rule when it comes to skincare. Basically what that means is 80% of your results and change in the skin happen at home, and 20% is from in studio treatments. This does not mean that your monthly facials aren't important, they absolutely are! But if you come see me once a month, get a treatment, and then go home and use random products from tiktok, you probably will never get the skin of your dreams...

It is kind of like if you only worked out with a trainer 1 time a month and the rest of the month you didn't work out. You probably would have a great workout, feel sore, and then slightly better, but it is not going to magically make you 20 lbs lighter and have biceps chiseled from the gods.

Your professional treatments are absolutely part of the process, but honestly you can achieve amazing things just by the things you do every single day! It is almost like CONSISTENCY IS KEY.. who would have thought?

Because I believe home care products are so important, I want to make sure to help you find products that work, that you like and are also within your budget. Most internet influencers don't care and just want to sell you and a thousand other people the magical $15 cream that made them 20 years younger in 1 week lololol. I am not going to just sell you something because it is trendy, even though I try to stay knowledgable somewhat about trends, (even tho my insta and tiktok don't show me like any skinfluencers bc my algorithm) so that I can help you navigate the chaos that skincare is.

Everything I carry at Truepenny has been personally used by me. I take a lot of pride in what I offer, and truly believe the products I carry work. So if something is NOT working for you, whether it's the results, price, smell, feel, etc. please please let me know! I will never be offended if you tell me you don't like something (even if it is the beauty oil)

I do want to talk about all the skincare lines I offer here at truepenny and why I like them and who it is for! (BTW none of the lines I carry use fragrance, dyes, phalates, etc)

I started using Lira Clinical in esthetics school actually! It has made the most change in my skin out of all the skin products out there. It goes head to head with expensive lines like Skinbetter Science, and for a fraction of the cost.

Why I like it:

  • Their products are all in 1. Each product contains multiple benefits, such as brightening, healing, protection, regeneration, acne fighting, balancing, etc.

  • Their products can target all kinds of skin concerns! Rosacea, acne, dark spots, aging, etc.

  • They also have lots of botanical extracts, plant stem cells, and have many award winning formulas. My favorite is "Mastiha" which is a powerful healer, not only in skincare but in other fields such as dentistry and other medical uses.

A few months after I opened my business, I was actually in Las Vegas for an esthetics convention and while I was there, a complete stranger complimented my skin. I wasn't even wearing makeup, and this was literally the first time in my life that this had happened. I couldn't stop crying tears of joy because I struggled with acne for basically my whole life. I decided that day that I want others to have that same feeling I did, and so I decided I needing to learn everything I could about acne so I can help as many people as I can, and Face Reality has an in depth course, and it's where I started!

Why I like it:

  • Their products are all acne safe, simple to use, and effective.

  • Even though this is technically an "acne line" even if you don't have acne, they are great products in general for most skin types! Such as rosacea, sensitive skin, young skin, mature skin.

  • They are a decent price point compared to other acne lines, or other skin care lines in general.

This is a newer line I am carrying, but I brought it on because of all of their amazing sunscreens! They have so many options, are acne safe, and mineral based! Then I started trying their skincare products and ended up LOVING so many of them. They are comparable to Lira Clinical as far as peptides, pigment fighting, and healing (without as many botanicals) and have a price point more of my clients prefer!

Why I like it:

  • The products actually work! They feel good too!

  • Each product is filled with ingredients that have clinical data to support it. The peptides, retinol, and brightening ingredients are honestly 10/10.

  • The products are simple to use, and the system makes it so easy without having to navigate 50 products to decide. Their products are made to help your skin heal from photodamage. (aka years of sunburns)

  • Their SPF's are some of the BEST. I use a tinted moisturizing spf serum from them everyday, and I am glowing baby!

This is a smaller boutique line I originally started carrying because I wanted some other options for my acne clients. Their products are simple, more plant based, and offer more products towards sensitized and dry skin! Even though they are more of a plant based, holistic line, the results are very effective. I highly recommend taking another look at the products I carry from this line if you struggle with acne, eczema, sensitive or reactive skin. Honestly, they even have amazing before and afters on their website for pigment too!

Why I like it:

  • They utilize ingredients that are clinically proven to make change in the skin, but are also full of botanicals and natures natural sources.

  • Their variety of cleansers, moisturizers and serums are amazing but without feeling overwhelming. Their oil cleanser, calming moisture cream, and lipid replenishing drops are some of my top sellers!

  • They really support us small solo estheticians! They do not retail in big box stores, amazon, etc. They really have amazing customer service, and have gone above and beyond for me multiple times.

This is my newest line, and what I would call an "Herbalist Line" . I have tried many lines in the past, but they have been too high of a price point, mediocre results, very earthy smells where it's unpleasant to wear after a few hours. So I have been much pickier about bringing in a line like this and have gone without one for a couple years now. The products are absolutely devine. They smell amazing, feel amazing, and using just the products for a few weeks I had many people compliment my skin.

Why I like it:

  • Their most expensive product is only $70, and that is for an antioxidant serum with astaxanthin and THD (vitamin c see my last blog post!) Other lines I considered, charged $70 for a cleanser lol

  • This line is full of antioxidants, healing balms, and gentle plant based exfoliants.

  • I wouldn't use just this line for acne, but it can definitely support acne skin!

  • This line would be best for aging skin, dry skin, rough textured skin, honestly really any and all skin types! These products have been my favorite to use in facials recently.

  • Currently, it is probably my favorite because of 1. the products, 2. their customer support, and 3. their values for ethical farming, sourcing, and producing!

This is probably my most luxurious line. I only stock a couple products because the price point is so high, but they do work... really well. This is always on my shelf for a skin emergency. They can help heal the worst of the worst of skin concerns and emergencies.

But I am obsessed with the cleansing oil, and it is my most favorite of all time, and so it is hard for me (and clients) to use anything else. Most people switch back after trying some others I offer.

I do offer a few other products from other lines such as glymed, anfisa, mixi, and SIV too. Those lines I only carry 1 to 2 products that I truly love.

I really hope you fall in love with some of these products and lines like I have. These products have changed me and my clients skin time and time again. I am always trying to get the best I can for you all because I probably care about your skin even more than you think! like srsly i really do.
