Okay y'all, it is vital to your understanding of what skin products and ingredients to look for when you have a basic understanding of the skin! This is broken down into the parts that you will encounter most often, hear on tiktok, and skincare marketing lingo. Of course the skin is wayyy more complicated than this, because it is a literal organ, but if you can understand a bit of how the skin works, you will probably save money in the long run on products or treatments that don't actually benefit your skin or skin concerns.
This is a basic diagram of the layers of our skin!

Epidermis: Most skincare products target this layer of the skin, and these keywords are often used in marketing.

Dermis: This layer is important for skin structure, and is the one that will cause visible signs of aging.

As a bonus to these graphics I made for the layers of the skin. I wanted to share some basics to taking care of your skin, and an easy list to refer back to if you have no idea what to do or where to start.
Rules of the Skin.
(Yes I made these rules and you must'th follow'th them)
Consistency is key. Everybody has unique skin. BUT no matter you skin, CONSISTENCY is what will make the difference in the long run. This is true for your overall health. Our bodies are miraculous, and can heal and change. There is no magic pill. (if there was I would have a line out my door. lol)
Everybody's skin is unique. Lifestyles, genetics, climate, disease, medications, and more can all play a role into your skin. They all factor into your skins unique needs, and so maybe stop doom scrolling tiktok and trying every viral trend that cured their acne overnight... (eye roll eye roll)
Nothing changes overnight. LET ME BE LOUD AND CLEAR! NOTHING CHANGES OVERNIGHT. Changes in the skin takes weeks and months. Clinical studies don't study the skin and products over a day or two. They track changes in the skin for a while. The longer the skin concern has been there, (sun damage, wrinkles) the longer it will take to see results.
If it burns IT IS NOT WORKING. Literally your skin is saying please stop! There is a time and place for painful treatments, but in your day to day skin care regimen your products should not burn. Light stinging that dissipates quickly can be okay. Redness, burning, or itching are NOT.
You do not need a 10 step skin routine. The skin literally is created to keep everything out of it. A routine with more products will not make your skin better just because you are applying more things. Taking it back to basics will always be best. (cleanser, targeted serum, moisturizer, spf).
