💟 Chemical Peels : True or False?

Before I get to the main course of this email. I wanted to share another way you can support my small business, and purchase items you probably already buy online from amazon and things like that! I have a storefront with FullScript where you can buy all your vitamins, supplements, body, hair, and skin products. They even have items for babies, kids, animals, and more. I purchase my own supplements, and body lotions through this store too! You can filter by items that are third party tested (which I find very helpful). I also created collections specific for acne, gut, immune system, skincare, body, etc. It is a one stop shop, that helps keep your money in our community. Plus through my store, you save 10% off all the MSRP pricing. Yay! I am always updating it, and if you have any questions about what might be helpful for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Last week I talked about chemical peels, what they do and who they are for. Today I am going to answer some common misconceptions and frequently asked questions I get!

before and after chemical peel series

So, Chemical peels: True or False?

More peeling from a chemical peel means it worked better!

False. Okay this is probably the BIGGEST misconception out there. We see and heard of people getting peels where their face is completely sloughing off like a snake, and 15-20 years ago, yes! That is exactly what you expected from a peel. But times and technology has changed, and the skin industry has evolved and learned so much more. There are TONS of peels on the market, and many are aimed to not create a big visible peel, but still work very well. Plus you can do the same peel multiple times, and peel differently each time. It can all depend on how dry your skin is, stress, immune system, and more.

Before I became an esthetician, I would do medium depth peels, and I would peel differently each time, even though it was the same person applying it and the same peel each time.

Chemical Peels are only for the face.

False. Peels can be done basically anywhere on the body, BUT you should never do more than 1-2 parts of the body at a time. Like I would not do a deeper peel on the face and neck AND the back. If it was more superficial that would be probably be okay, but that depends person to person. If you already have a high stress day to day life, putting a peel or treatment on multiple areas of your body could drive your system into overload. My favorite areas to do a peel on the body is the arms, shoulders, and hands! It is a very sun exposed area and we treat those areas very differently than our face, and even our legs. Most women shave or wax, which is a form of exfoliation, but we rarely do the same amount of exfoliation to our arms.

It is a great area to use peel pads or glycolic serums too!

Chemical peels are only for those with acne or pigmentation.

False. (Okay a lot of these are false lololol) Honestly, really anybody can benefit from them! If you don’t have anything visible that you are working on, it may be more difficult to see great “before and after” results, but they are great for preventative care! There is probably pigment deeper into the skin that will eventually surface, and peels are a great way to keep it at bay. I have seen many women who have done very regular superficial lactic or glycolic peels and their skin is so smooth and even for a long time. Of course, we can’t see into the future, but all I know is I am going to keep giving myself peels as long as I can!

Sensitive skin can’t tolerate chemical peels.

False. As I wrote last week, sensitive or rosacea prone skin can get chemical peels, but the types of peel done is very important. The skin barrier should be stable and non-issue for the most part, and pre and post care is also very important to the integrity of the skin and the results.

One peel will correct pigment or acne.

False. Just like 1 facial won’t take away all your wrinkles, most treatments require a few sessions BUT what you do every day at home is most important! If you are working on your dark spots, but then continue to not use any brightening serums for the pigment, continue to not wear SPF, and go to tanning beds. You’re honestly wasting your hard earned cash. Focus on your daily routine and habits before committing to more advanced treatments!

If it’s burning it’s working!

False. I used to think this with my skincare, and I literally would have to take deep breaths to use some of the creams I had. BUT I realized my barrier was compromised and that is why everything burned! Yes, some peels and enzymes are spicy but it should be a controlled sensation, that doesn’t last too long. Not all peels will burn or feel spicy, and that is TOTALLY OKAY TOO!

I am sure there are some things I missed, so reply to this email with all your questions about peels or anything else skincare related! I would love to help answer or talk about anything you have heard or seen! <3
